Title: blitting text and images

here is two small and (hopefully) handy classes for blitting text and images. i'm posting them hoping they may be helpful

TexturePack (http://www.aptalkarga.com/download/TexturePack.java) packs several arbitrary sized images into a jPCT texture. it automatically layouts images and adjusts Texture size.

GLFont (http://www.aptalkarga.com/download/GLFont.java) creates GL renderable (blittable) fonts out of awt Fonts.

in the below image, the bubble images are blitted with TexturePack and text is blitted with GLFont :)

note: these two classes use new FrameBuffer.blit(..) method in the upcoming 1.16 release

Both classes are very useful IMHO. I like the TexturePack-thingy most, because it can help to reduce texture memory usage on lower end cards (well, it also helps on better cards, but it may not matter on those).
If i could only find the time to do that bloody game that i have in my mind and put those classes (as well as Paul's SoundManager) to use... :-\

Is texture pack needed for GLFont?  Don't suppose you have a little demo or something to look at?  I'm still kind of learning all this.

yes, GLFont uses TexturePack behind the scenes. it creates an image for each chracter and packs all these images into a texture with TexturePack

there is nothing special using it. just create a GLFont somewhere in time:

and at the end of your game loop, after FrameBuffer.update() before FrameBuffer.display() draw any string with it:

I made a text blitter method for strings too but I guess I will better try this classes. Actually my text blitting method is working fine but my image editor is paint so the quality is too bad.

yeap, creating font textures on the fly is handy. i just barrowed the idea and some piece of code from fenggui ;)

I copied texture pack and put it into a class, but i got an error on this line:

error:

The method blit(int[], int, int, int, int, int, int, int, int, boolean) in the type FrameBuffer is not applicable for the arguments (Texture, int, int, int, int, int, int, int, int, int, boolean, Color)

Is it possible to use these classes with sw renderer? As I understood here multitexturing is used... and I don't know whether jpct allows to use multitexturing with sw renderer...

OK I have added it to my project, but how can I check the lenght of the string to be placed in the screen in just one line.

I noticed there is a method to get the String boundaries, but I want to get the index inside the string to fit a certain width. How can I do this? I have been thinking on recursively cheking the middle of the String until getting an aproximation to the required width, but this may need to check many string boundaries width for each text blitted.

i dont think it will cost much. approximate an index and go backward and forward to precisely calculate it.

you may also use Java2D font metrics, layout etc classes to calculate it. during consturction, GLFont uses FontMetrics to calculate each char's size

I've tried using GLFont and got some weird results. Maybe this is related to Linux (im using centos5); it works with Software renderer, although displays ugly, and not working with Hardware renderer at all. I've created a test case for sw renderer:

well, GLFont as the name suggests is not intended for SW renderer. Egon supports blitting for both renderers so it works for SW renderer too. texts are very sensitive to resizing, so even slightest resize (as in sw blit operation) i would suggest java2d for blitting texts on SW renderer

i've just tried GLFont with GL renderer and it seemed ok to me. below is the modified version of loop method in HelloWorld sample. does this work for you ?

Doing a resized blit in software causes filtering artifacts which are nice for graphics but bad for text. I had this problem myself and couldn't come up with a good solution except reverting to Java2D...just as raft suggested.

calculate a point above your character. then find its projection point on screen by using Interact2D. blit your text at projection point

Well, yea.. the render loop to update the name with the player position... (working in jpct-ae btw)
Thing is, when I disable the Interact2D, it does work properly, (except for the position then =p)

The OOE happens when rendering the sky box while trying to create a new visibility list. I don't see how this should be related to projection. Looks more like as if you are missing some draw-calls, so that you create visibility lists over and over again. Can you please post the log output before that exception as well as your complete render loop?

You are constantly getting an exception thrown in the draw method, but the catch swallows it. Change

to something like

to see the actual reason.

Of course it is. Like the docs say:

...or that's at least what the docs should say. What they actually say, is something about the center being behind the viewplane...i'll correct this. Anyway, it can be null. If it is, your draw thread crashes causing the creation of new visibility lists over and over again leading to an out of memory after a while.

yes. that's because android does not have awt classes.

GlFont and TexturePack has Android versions. search for them in forum or Bones demo also has them

Hello,

I am experimenting with this extremly helpful piece of code, but up until now I had only little luck.
1) I copied the classes GLFont and TexturePack from the first post
2) I solved the class dependency of java.awt by adding Project->Properties->Java Build Path->Add Library->JRE System library

But I am still getting two errors in the TexturePack:
the constructor jpct.Texture(BufferedImage(image), Boolean(useAlpha)) is undefined
the function com.threed.jpct.FrameBuffer.blit is not defined for parameters ...

I expect that this can have something to do with your information from the first post that you used the experimental jpct... but
1) That was 7 years ago
2) Your link for the experimental beta jpct doesn't work any more

So I am intrigued to know - is the "experimental" jpct version of blit and Texture now reachable somewhere else? or did you reprogrammed it for the classic jpct_ae? Or how can I solve this code now in 2016?

you cannot use desktop version for Android. there is a separate one for jPCT AE (http://www.jpct.net/forum2/index.php/topic,1563.0.html)

I just found myself that in the Android forum is a different version. As usually the problem was something trivial on my side.
