Title: Spam
Post by: culli on May 16, 2006, 04:34:29 am
May I suggest you enable "visual confirmation" for forum registrations?  The spam is just starting.  It'll get much worse.   :x

Thanks,
Jim

You mean that you have to type in some code from a generated image when registering? If so, this already is enabled. Plus i'm maintaining a long list of forbidden mail addresses and names (or parts of them) like *casino*.
All this helps a little but can't block all of this spam...

BTW: It already was much worse at the beginning of this year...

Jupp, there are PerlPlugins already, that can analyse those images and enter the correct data.
What realy makes me wonder is: People must click those links and buy. Without customers, spammers would stop.

Great!  I hate spam.

Wow, I didn't know there were perl scripts that could read those images.  I thought that would be a more difficult thing to do.  Guess it just proves that there are a lot of smart (yet evil) people out there.

You are right that there must be people that order from the spam sites or they would not keep sending out the spam bots.

Grr.

The forum now uses "KittenAuth" to prevent spam bots from registering. Just logout and click on "register" to see, what this is...

well, the idea is great, but have you already looked at the names of the images? if you have to select birds and the images are called bird1-3 than its easy for tools to find this out.
There are perllibs out there, that handle the analysing of the letterimages. writing a tool that reads the html source and finds out what image to klick is hell alot easier.

Yes, i know that...but it can be configured and, as long as not too many people are using this mod, maybe it's not worth the effort for the spammers to write a script that handles this mod. At least, there hasn't been a spam registration let alone a spam entry after activating this mod.

Ok, picture names are now all "catXX.png" no matter which animal they really show. If the spam starts again, i can always use completely different pics and questions, but for now, i'll leave it like it is.

That looks great!  Good luck building a spam robot to identify farm animals or distinguish kittens from lions.  They might do it, but it will be a LONG time.

Thanks!
Jim

In fact it maybe wont take many time to do it, as Egon said the pic have the same name always, so just need to take the pic of the html, turn it into bytes and store in a list with a answer to it, and make the spam robot compare the byte sequence and give an answer, but in general people that uses thhis robots are losers that just downloaded them from the web and think they are hackers or something.
