The Nexus one is quite good as its nicely stated, open and first to be updated(probably keep being upgraded too).
The Motorola Milestone what I picked because it had the keyboard(also nice stats) but its bootloader is locked and so is the newer Motorala models too(DroidX). However Droid 1 isn't locked.
If the Nexus had the keyboard I probably would of gone with that at the time.
I haven't kept up with the latest models of Android so I don't know what's the best now.

i have an N1 and it's quite handy for development. however it has a known multi touch problem with no real cure. see this post.

Judging from the benchmark results given by An3DBench, i would favour the Galaxy S too. However, i own a Galaxy (without the S) and am very disappointed about Samsungs update policy (there are none!). I don't know if this will be the same with the S, but there is a chance...so, if you want maximum performance now, i would go with the S. If it's ok if the phone is a little slower but there's a higher chance for future updates, go with the N1.

Nexus One is a very nice phone with decent stats. But that's only a developer phone from my company, so i dont own it. ^^ I will buy a HTC Desire, because it's very similar to the One, but with hardware buttons. I was able to get my hands on the galaxy s but frankly I dont like it much. In my opinion it's slightly to big to be handled well. But if it's only for development purposes, you can go with nexus one, desire, galaxy s, i think.

Is anything new worth mentioning on this front? I'm going to get one tomorrow to start playing with jPCT-AE.

You might want to look at the benchmark results from An3DBenchXL: http://jpct.de/xl

Just keep in mind that the leaders of the pack are usually overclocked phones, but it should give you a rough overview.

I'm not sure I understand that list. Is the Nexus S a Samsung phone? And why are there pretty much only these two models in the benchmark (Nexus and the LG one)? And are those benchmarks 3D or is it just a 2D OpenGL test?

It's a 3d benchmark. The list is dominated by LG Something and Nexus S just because they are fast and popular among those who use benchmarks. But if you click through the pages, you'll find many other models as well. The Nexus S is basically a Samsung Galaxy S with Android 2.3 and some minor enhancements. I recently got one myself...it's pretty cool.

I use a Galaxy S for development, and it works quite well. But you should not ask "what is the best device on the market", because you want to target as many devices as possible. Its more important to decide for which plattform you want to develop. Looking at this chart, the choice should be obvious: http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html Keep in mind that jPCT-AE is even 1.6 compatible ;-) Sorry for getting a bit side tracked ;-)

Oh, and yes.. EgonOlsen is right, Samsungs update policy is not existing. E.G. the 2.3 Update for the Galaxy S is already a month overdue (Not that I care, there is a leaked 2.3.3 version :P).

So long,
Kernle
