Only some of my computers produce this error (a laptop with both an NVidia graphics chip and an Intel one and a desktop using onboard graphics), but when I get this the screen starts blinking and the game doesn't run. This is for the hardware renderer. I'm using lwjgl 2.9.1, for whatever it's worth.

Can you please set the Logger to debug and post the complete log output including the exception? Which version of jPCT are you using?

That can't be the whole log. It contains no information about the initialisation and no exception. I need the complete output from start-up to the error.

It's too big a log to fit into the console's 9999 maximum line buffer. I'll switch computers and make the Logger save to a file. But if you're considering making a new version of jpct (if it is, in fact, a bug), would you also improve the "undefined texture" error message to either point out in what class the error is happening or to point out the name of the texture?

I'll post the complete log in a few minutes.

What's the size of your shadow map? Have to tried to reduce it on these systems? One reason for the this problem can be a texture size that exceeds the hardware's limits.

At least we've identified the problem: at 4096 it works. But, again, how do I test for it? And what about that error message (the "tried to set undefined texture" message)?

You can't really test for it. You can set the Logger's on error mode to throw an exception and you can catch that. But that would require that you fix the others errors too or otherwise, you won't even reach that part of the program.
The problem with these shadow map sizes is that 8192*8192 might be supported by the hardware, but creating such a huge map requires half a gig of graphics memory and it's unlikely that an onboard solution can deal with that by default. However, there's no way to query this, so you are stuck to either exception handling or reasonable presets based on the underlying system. Robombs for example does this at startup by detecting the GPU and applying some defaults.
