Title: Members' backgrounds...
Post by: ToddMcF2002 on April 18, 2007, 02:39:24 pm
Thanks.  I appreciate the encouragement.  I read the whole Karga thread and it was amazing to watch your project transform from the raw basics to the end result - very inspiring.

I'm very curious what peoples backgrounds are here.  I'm a developer in the financial industry with about 2 years of C++, 6 of Java and 8-10 with VB.  I mostly do Java middle tier services now.  I have no gaming development experience but I've played tons of RPG's.  I think Temple of Elemental Evil was the pinnacle of turn based combat gaming and there is a great void today for that kind of gameplay.

That's my story and why I'm here anyway...

thx todd ;)

well, indeed this subject deserves an individual topic but here is what i'm: i'm educated in industrial eng. have experience in 2-3 years VB and delphi, and 6 years in java. other than karga, my most significant experience was being a developer in a huge telecom server family. at the moment i work as a freelancer spending my last pieces of hope for finding funds for karga..

except a tiny ai game (http://www.myjavaserver.com/~raft/plus1/) i had no game experience either. as i player, i'm a carmack fan and a fanatic quaker and think quake3 is still the best in fps category ;)

well... as everybody i m newbie to game development. In fact I don t particularly do a game. I use jpct in my phd project to give 3D representations to pedagogical agents  (i.e. virtual teachers) designed with the JADE API... I have 2-3 years part time experience in C/C++, and 6/7 years in java. Very interested in everything that is related to softwares agents. I also was a game addict (no time for that currently :( ), mostly to civilization (freeciv), UFO, warcraft 2, syndicate...
That s it... ;)

And i...i just live here... ;) I've started with Java in 1999 (what you can still "experience" in some ugly parts of jPCT, because the first "version" of it dates back to that days), i have a degree in computer science, i'm working as a website/middletier jsp/java-developer for a german yellow pages publishing house, i'm a collector of insane amounts of computer hardware and i'm a passionate gamer since the early days (C64->Amiga->PC). I've written several stupid games for the C64 (all gone) and some for the Amiga (http://amiga.emucamp.com/quelle.htm (http://amiga.emucamp.com/quelle.htm), http://amiga.emucamp.com/traders.htm (http://amiga.emucamp.com/traders.htm)) and i always did 3d related stuff. Currently, i'm busy working on jPCT 1.14 which will hopefully bring a nice additional feature for the OpenGL renderer. Just not today...today is our gaming day.

Well, I am a gammer since ATARI was the best technology. I learned java almost alone my programming style is messy I guess becausse I am messy in real life: I am 23 yo, live in Ecuador and really liked 3d. I used to model on 3d studio max as a hobby. Well, I thought on a project about 2 years ago but I necer could finish it for time and many other problems. I know C++ (few), java (some) and basic .net (a bit). Now I work developing mobile applications.

Nowadays I just enter to the jpct forums to see if I can help to somebody but I ak afraid I have not used it in many time so I cant remember anything.

I'm a last year student of computer science and informations. Have 4 more exams to do and dissertation, which will most likely be the warehouse visualisation i did with jpct  ;D.
In highschool (computer technician) were my first steps of learning programing in Pascal an later I learned on my own to do some things in Delphi. In university i got some basics of Java, the language which i still like and use the most. In second year at university i found my self a part time job as developer, where I learned most of my today konwledge of Java and PL/SQL. I used to play a lot of games as a kid on nintendo ad later on PS and PS2, and of course PC. But now I do not any more. I get bored after few minutes. Todays games really doesn't have hart or maybe I lost the hart for them.

I am simply a dreamer. Even though I have a bachelors in Computer Science, I prefer to be 3d modelling and animating moreso than programming. I have no prior experience to game development. Sadly, I spend most of my days either at work making webpages (I actually do more than that, but that pretty much sums the job description all up) or playing mmorpgs. I am still in the process of re-lighting my passion for game development, but for now, I enjoy reading all the posts in this forum.

I am a self taught:) I find it is easier to do it on your own terms.

I am 17, and had my first computer in 1997, so that would make me about 8 years old at the time.
I have experience in assembly language, and os development. I was part of a project with the aim of creating a 100% ASM Operating System.
I had to stop concentrating on this after my browser-based game, FutureRP, began getting a userbase.

I have made a 2d isometric mmorpg, which I modified to be iso/3d, then finally fully 3d a few months ago:).

The 3D mmorpg is not far from completion, but I have chosen to return to the browser based game to upgrade it. 3 more weeks, then I'm done (I hope:)).

I live in Mexico City. 23 Years old and about to get a degree in computer science. Working with Java for around 4 years now. Ive done some TLC/TK and shell dev back in the days (Can't remember a thing now). Last job I had was to develop a real time app for the police here in mexico. Ive done some modeling (amateur) and I'm trying to get my math to work and get a nice game going in 3D. Sadly im not a good modeler and I have like 23298 game projects unfinished...
I play all kinds of games but probably my fav is FPS and my favourite game of all time is Duke Nukem 3d!! Or maybe it is X-COM UFO Defense. I can't choose between those 2! UFO is the best turn based strategy game ever and duke nukem just rocks. I'd like to be able to transfer some of my ideas into a game soon!

I also have a thing for CO OP games and I think the world needs more CO OP games.

Hi Guys

I am a bit different. I have nothing to do with game programming. Strange you might think?

I studied Computer Science in the 90s and Design in the early 00s. Since then I have be developing products that the consumer can change before purchase. Like mass customisation on speed. I have just launched applets based on JPCT ( http://fluidforms.at (http://fluidforms.at) ). I have a few bugs at the moment like a memory leak but I'll get to the bottom of them soon.

I've been coding Java for about 5 years on and off. Before JPCT I was using http://www.processing.org (http://www.processing.org) but wanted a better 3D renderer.

Im looking forward to see what I can get out of JPCT with a bit more experience with it.

I've had quite good results with Processing and 2D. Kinda hard to customize at first but you get really nice stuff once you know your way in.

Egon, do you have any interest instead of collecting hardware.

hi all,
Living in the North East of the UK, i am currently getting to grips with c# as my day job and also trying to finish off my 4th (and probably last) mobile phone game for my part time biz Plastic Cow Games (http://www.plasticcowgames.com).

I've been programming as a hobby for over 20 years now from the early spectrum days, onto the Amiga(which i miss loads), the PC and mobile phones.
Having seen what jpct is capable of doing i'm looking forward to starting (although probably not finishing) a few projects :)
